Kauai mayor’s veto bill heads to county council
LIHUE, Kauai — The Kauai County Council will hold a special meeting this week to officially receive the mayor’s veto of a bill that would have regulated the use of pesticides and genetically modified crops by large agricultural business.
The Garden Island reported Sunday that the six-member council will meet Thursday and possibly consider overriding the mayor’s decision.
Mayor Bernard Carvalho Jr. vetoed the bill last week, saying he agreed with its intent but found it legally flawed.
The council voted in favor of Bill 2491 on Oct. 16. Officials say if the council accepts the Carvalho’s veto, it would be allowed to try overturning it in a couple of weeks.
Man dies after moped collides with vehicle
WAILUKU, Oahu — Police in Maui say a 36-year-old man has died after the moped he was riding collided with another vehicle.
The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports that the man was riding in Haiku late Saturday when he crossed a center line and crashed into a 2003 Audi sedan.
Authorities say he was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity is being held pending family notification.
The 43-year-old Haiku woman driving the Audi was not injured. Her passengers, a 20-year-old man and a 17-year-old girl, were also uninjured.
Police say the crash happened around 10:38 p.m. as the moped driver was heading north on Kokomo Road.
Investigators are still trying to determine if speed, alcohol or drugs were factors.
The incident marks Maui’s 13th traffic-related fatality this year.
Crews searching
for missing kayaker
HONOLULU — Crews are searching for an 18-year-old man who went missing while kayaking on the North Shore of Oahu.
The Honolulu Fire Department and the U.S. Coast Guard have been conducting a joint search Sunday near Makaleha Beach Park for Dayne Ortiz.
The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports that Ortiz was last seen Saturday around 6 p.m. when his kayak overturned. Authorities say his brother tried to swim to his aid but wasn’t able to reach him.
Authorities were forced to suspend the search four hours later because of weather and darkness. They resumed searching at 5 a.m. Sunday, starting at the shoreline.
Ortiz was last seen wearing black swim trunks.
Woman charged
in Kapahulu stabbing
HONOLULU — A 44-year-old woman has been charged in the stabbing of another woman in Kapahulu.
The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports that 44-year-old Yoko Kato, of Moiliili, was charged Saturday with second-degree attempted murder.
Authorities in Honolulu arrested her Friday at her home in connection with the Oct. 25 stabbing of the 27-year-old victim.
Police say the victim sustained substantial bodily injury.
They say Kato’s bail has been set at $150,000.
